Asthma Management

Support and training for patients with asthma and respiratory health conditions.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic long-term lung disease that affects more than 3 million Canadians. It causes inflammation and narrowing of the bronchial tubes in our lungs, which leads to difficulty breathing. Common symptoms include persistent coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and increased mucous. Asthma can cause death, but with proper asthma management, people can live healthy and active lives.

The role of a pharmacist for asthma patients

For patients with asthma, a pharmacist is a very important member of your asthma management team – both in terms of patient teaching and optimization of asthma medications.

At Wellness Pharmacy, we educate our patients on how to best manage their condition. As part of their asthma management program, they are encouraged to keep a diary to track symptoms, which may be worsened by factors such as exercise and pollen. This allows our pharmacists to identify problems early so we can provide effective intervention, and help patients recognize when to seek medical or emergency treatment.

Because proper inhaler technique is critically important, we make sure that all patients who require inhalers are educated on how to use them. Patients may even be asked to demonstrate their technique at each refill. The pharmacist is then able to provide feedback to ensure optimal drug delivery to the patient’s lungs.

Respiratory health education

We offer health clinics on respiratory health, so anyone can speak with one of our pharmacists regarding their inhaler technique and how to improve their overall lung health. If we find that the patient may benefit from a change in their asthma medication therapy, we contact the physician and refer the patient to their physician to follow up.
